We have now been in Malta for 4 months and I can say from my experience most restaurants have been happy for us to sit outside with our little dog. Supermarkets have also been happy with me going grocery shopping with her in her bag while sitting in the trolly and I have seen other people do the same with their smaller breed dogs. I do think the size of your dog might matter as the aisles are quite narrow in a lot of supermarkets and your dog might grab itself a treat. 🙂
As for restaurants I have encountered 2 which wanted us to sit in a certain area outside, and we have visited more then we can count! However there is a bar/cafe in Sliema which is definitely not dog friendly so I would avoid this place at all costs with a dog. You can find them here on Trip advisor and decide for yourself.
Some of our favourite places we have been enjoying in Malta is Angelo’s 2 in Bugibba. We have mainly stopped here for drinks but they also serve home cooked maltese dishes accompanied with an absolutely breathtaking view. We have only ordered food once here and it was tasty with generous portions. You can watch a little video and see the view from Angelo’s 2 on our Instagram here
We have also been frequenting Ocean basket which is a South-African restaurant chain that offers mainly seafood dishes and sushi. It is located in Qawra, they also have a lovely view and outside seating area. We have always enjoyed our time there, however I could possibly be biased as I am South-African and any experience from home excites me. Check it out for yourself and see what you think.
In Valetta we have visited Tico Tico a few times for lunch and we have always had the Maltese platter for 2 with a bottle of Maltese wine. The platter is large and doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket but can vary depending on the person making it. The furniture can definitely do with some updating and the experience at times can be a bit rough around the edges but the staff make up for it in effort.
The Sun and splendour pub in St Julian’s is not to be missed if you are looking for a place to stop for a drink. From the outside it doesn’t look much different to other pubs in the area but they have an amazing private beer garden in the back. It is a great way to get some peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of St Julian’s and if you visit in the week it is usually very relaxed. On the weekend they have karaoke and it is also a great place to watch sport. Make sure you book a table in advance if you want to go watch a big sports event as it can get pretty full. They have a small menu with light eats.
We have also visited Surfside in Sliema on quite a few occasions. They have a large menu and cater for everyone, from seafood, veggie to meat lovers. The view is also amazing here and you can sit on their second floor outside with your dog. The restaurant has 3 floors and each floor could really be a restaurant on its own it’s that big. So it is very cozy and you don’t feel like you are being pushed in a corner with your pooch. They often do 50% off deals on their food on Deal.com.mt so make sure you buy a voucher as it is well worth it!
